The flight time will be just under 11 hours. The route goes very far north. First across the North Sea, then past Iceland. If you are lucky and have a cloudless day, you will get a breathtaking view of Greenland. Much of the remaining flight route is over the vastness of Canada. The landing on California's west coast is around 1 p.m. local time. Due to the 9 hour time difference, the route actually only took 2 hours. The Boeing 747-400 is a wide-body aircraft from Boeing Commercial Airplanes, an advanced variant of the first Boeing 747. The first 747-400 was introduced on January 26, 1988 and made its maiden flight on April 29, 1988. With 694 delivered over the course of 20 years from 1989 to 2009, it was the best-selling 747 variant. After the first 747-400 deliveries, Boeing started producing other variants of the aircraft. The first 747-400 Combi that could carry both passengers and cargo was introduced in June 1989. The 747-400 Domestic, a short-haul variant of the aircraft developed for Japanese intra-island services, first flew on March 18, 1991 and entered service with Japan Airlines on October 22, 1991. A freight variant, the 747-400F, was first delivered to Cargolux in May 1993.
