Pilotsview.de | A Saturday morning in autumn. The Jumbo Boeing 747-800 has just taken off. The destination of this flight is on the American west coast. It's the daily flight to Los Angeles. The flight time will be just under 11 hours. The route goes very far north. First across the North Sea, then past Iceland. If you are lucky and have a cloudless day, you will get a breathtaking view of Greenland. Much of the remaining flight route is over the vastness of Canada. The landing on California's west coast is around 1 p.m. local time. Due to the 9 hour time difference, the route actually only took 2 hours. A gain that will be lost on the return journey: the Boeing 747-800. In the 1990s, several further developments of the 747 were announced under the designations 747-500 / -600 and 747-700, but these did not meet with sufficient customer interest and were therefore not implemented. The 747-8 has been enlarged compared to the 747-400 and is intended to close the capacity gap between the Boeing 777-300 or Airbus A340-600 and Airbus A380-800. The increase in capacity is achieved by stretching the fuselage, making the Boeing 747-8 the longest passenger aircraft in the world at 76.30 meters, replacing the Airbus A340-600 (75.36 meters). The most important technological innovation, however, are the General Electric GEnx engines taken over from the 787. These are intended to enable a two-digit percentage lower consumption compared to the 400 version. In addition, the noise emission should also be reduced by a further 30 %. On December 6, 2006 Lufthansa announced that it had ordered twenty 747-8 Intercontinental with the option of 20 more aircraft
