Greenland glacier. A view from around 36,000ft. The overflight in a westerly direction. Most of Greenland's glaciers are slow-flowing streams of ice that came from the inland ice sheet. Only when the ice is moving is it referred to as a glacier, and when the ice breaks away or calves into the water, it forms icebergs. The glacier ice moves by gravity and by the meltwater, which acts as a kind of lubricant at the bottom of the glacier. In contrast to the ice sheet, which is completely flat in the middle, the glaciers are usually jagged at the edges. The crevasses arise because the ice moves at different speeds.
